The one most incredible thing to do in Jaisalmer, India

You might have come across 10 things to do in Jaisalmer, 18 things to do in Jaisalmer, the top 7 things to do in Jaisalmer, but have you ever come across the one most incredible thing to do in Jaisalmer that sums up what that place is all about?

Jaisalmer is known as the golden city of Rajasthan. Just like Jaipur is known as the pink city and Jodhpur is known as the blue city. And, the reason why it is called so is that;

  • The place is surrounded by desert and it is literally in the middle of nowhere.
  • Every house, building and even the fort’s walls have sandy color bricks and stones.

Limited time and limited things to do

It could be the weather or it could be that you are on a packed schedule that you might not have enough time to see and do ‘n’ number of things. Which is very understandable. So how do you decide which places to see and which places to leave out? Without any regrets.

Well, two ways that come to mind are;

  • See the places that are showing up over and over again in every blog.
  • Google the pictures of everything that speaks out to you and see if you are up for a visit.

Also, there is a third way;

You could ask a travel blogger, someone who has visited the city, for their suggestions. Someone like me 🙂

And, truth be told, I am more than happy to help.

So what is that one most incredible thing to do in Jaisalmer?

It is the desert safari.

This is one thing that I suggest you never miss out on, come what may.

I went on the desert safari with Hostel Lavie. We left the hostel at 1 pm and came back the next day around the same time. So it was a one-day safari that I signed up for. There are more packages though – two-day and even three-day safaris. So you can take your pick depending on the time that you have and your endurance level.

I would like to suggest not to try and test your limits in the harsh environment. It might end up ruining your experience and even affecting your health. Since the whole point of travel is to be able to have fun and relax, no point voluntarily giving yourself a hard time.

So desert safari started with taking us to the market where people bought all the things that they needed like snacks, drinks, etc. After that, we took a long drive to a fort (not Jaisalmer fort). On the way, we saw some deers, camels and lots of goats. It was a fun drive. The fort is in ruins and abandoned. But still has the beauty intact.

Then came time to visit one of the lakes. There are a few lakes in Jaisalmer, that are literally in the middle of nowhere. The beauty that they add to the landscape is marvelous.

And, after a long ride on a camel’s back, we finally reached the campsite. The site was one mud house, again, in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by sand dunes and camels everywhere. The camels that we were riding on.

The breathtaking moments

It was almost time for sunset and the sky turned multiple shades of orange. It was the sunset of a lifetime. And, once the sun set, the temperature dropped fast and it started to get chilly.

I was lucky that that night the moon rise happened at around 3 am, so I was able to see a sky full of stars. And, eventually saw the moon so big and so close that I could just reach out and grab it. And yes, I was sleeping on a cot, in the middle of sand dunes and under the stars with a blanket and a pillow.

Jaisalmer is one of the places with the clearest of skies. The sky was full of a billion stars of all sizes. The Saptarishi was so clear and so big. It was an incredible sight. The other travelers were all sitting together in the mud house talking, drinking, exchanging stories, and eating barbequed chicken. It is a night that has stayed with me for so long and is going to stay with me forever.

If you ever plan to visit Jaisalmer, make sure to opt for the desert safari. It will be worth it.
